Understand vlookup and data validation in excel
Hi @Memnd! ![]()
Sydney here to help!
Data Validation and VLOOKUP make a fantastic team in Excel. Together, they let you pick an item from a dropdown list and instantly pull its matching details!
Here’s a quick breakdown of how they work:
1. Data Validation (The Dropdown)
It keeps data clean by limiting what someone can type into a cell.
- How to use it:
- Select your target cell.
- Go to the Data tab > click Data Validation.
- Under Allow, choose List.
- In the Source box, select your list of items (like product names) and click OK.
2. VLOOKUP (The Finder)
It searches for the item you picked and brings back related information from another column.
- The Formula:
=VLOOKUP(lookup_value, table_array, col_index_num, FALSE) - Example:
=VLOOKUP(E2, A2:C10, 2, FALSE)E2: Your dropdown cell.A2:C10: Your data table (your lookup item must be in the first column!).2: The column number you want data from (e.g., Column B is 2).FALSE: Tells Excel to find an exact match.
Put them together: select an item from your dropdown in E2, and your VLOOKUP formula will automatically display the right info!
